How to Price Your Web Design Services: A Guide for Beginners

Pricing is terrifying for new freelancers. Say a number too high, and the client walks away. Say a number too low, and you end up working for pennies. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to price your first few web design projects.

The 'Portfolio Building' Phase

For your first 3 clients, your primary goal is not money. It is reviews, testimonials, and portfolio pieces. Charge a highly competitive flat rate—perhaps $100 to $150 for a standard 5-page site. Over-deliver massively to ensure a 5-star review.

Transitioning to Value-Based Pricing

Once you have a portfolio, stop charging for your time and start charging for the value you provide. A website for a local plumber that brings in 5 new jobs a month is worth thousands of dollars. You are no longer selling 'pages'; you are selling a lead-generation machine.

The Three-Tier Proposal

Never give a client just one price. Always give them three options: 1. **Basic:** Just the website. 2. **Standard:** Website + Basic SEO optimization + Speed optimization. 3. **Premium:** Website + SEO + Automation (e.g., auto-reply to form submissions). Most clients will choose the middle option, automatically increasing your average project value!
